Choose pure Mathematics if you can cope with it — it's required for engineering, medicine, science, IT, accounting and many other fields, and you can't easily switch back to it later. Choose Mathematical Literacy only if pure Maths is genuinely beyond reach and the careers you're considering don't require it. This is the single subject choice that closes the most doors if you get it wrong.
What's the difference?
Pure Mathematics is the academic subject covering algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry and more — the maths that underpins science, engineering and commerce degrees. Mathematical Literacy is a practical subject about using everyday maths: budgets, interest, measurement, data and probability in real-life contexts. Both are valuable, but they open very different doors.
Careers and courses that need pure Maths
- Engineering (all branches)
- Medicine and most health sciences
- Actuarial science, accounting (CA route) and finance
- Computer science, data science and IT degrees
- Physics, chemistry and most natural sciences
- Architecture and quantity surveying
When Maths Literacy is fine
Mathematical Literacy is accepted for many careers and courses — including law, many humanities and social sciences, education (non-Maths phases), marketing, tourism, and a range of diplomas and vocational programmes. If your interests point clearly to these fields and pure Maths would drag down your overall marks, Maths Literacy can be the sensible choice.
The rule of thumb
If in doubt, take pure Maths. You can discover later that you didn't need it, but you can't easily switch into it in Grade 11 or 12 if you find you do.
Can I study at university with Maths Literacy?+
Yes — many degrees and diplomas accept Mathematical Literacy, including in law, humanities, education and business fields. But science, engineering, medicine, accounting (CA) and IT degrees require pure Mathematics.
Can I switch from Maths Literacy to pure Maths later?+
It's very difficult. You'll have missed foundational content, and many schools don't allow the switch after Grade 10. This is why the initial choice matters so much.
Is Maths Literacy easier than pure Maths?+
Most learners find Maths Literacy less demanding, but 'easier' is the wrong test. The right test is whether the careers you're considering will accept it — choose based on where you want to go.
