The basics

What is career guidance?

Career guidance is a structured process that helps you choose, change or grow a career that fits your interests, strengths, values and the job market. It combines honest self-assessment, reliable information about study and work options, and one-on-one advice — so your decision is built on evidence rather than guesswork.

It isn’t a single test that hands you one “correct” job. It’s a way of thinking that helps you understand yourself, understand your options, and build a realistic plan to get where you want to go — a skill you’ll use again and again through life.

Why it matters

A wrong choice is expensive

A single wasted year of study can cost tens of thousands of rand in fees, living costs and lost income — before the emotional cost of restarting. Good career guidance makes the decision deliberate, and cuts that risk.

Career guidance FAQ

What is career guidance?+

Career guidance is a structured process that helps you choose, change or grow a career that fits your interests, strengths, values and the job market. It combines self-assessment, reliable career information and one-on-one advice so decisions are made on evidence rather than guesswork.

What is the difference between career guidance and career counselling?+

The terms overlap. 'Career guidance' usually describes the broad set of activities — information, assessment, advice and planning. 'Career counselling' tends to describe deeper one-on-one work, often with a registered psychologist, especially where indecision or a major change is involved.

Who needs career guidance?+

Anyone facing a career decision — Grade 9 learners choosing subjects, matriculants choosing a path, students who've changed their mind, adults wanting a change, and people re-entering work. It's valuable at every stage of life, not only at school.

How much does career guidance cost?+

It ranges from free to several thousand rand. School Life Orientation and national services such as Khetha are free. Private assessments with an educational psychologist typically run from around R400 for a basic online assessment to R3,000+ for a full battery with a feedback session.
